PRP therapy is an innovative method for the treatment of many joint diseases. In the course of the treatment, an injection of plasma obtained from the patient's own blood using special PRP tubes is administered to the affected area. It is rich in platelets that actively participate in regeneration of damaged tissues.

HOW PRP THERAPY WORKS

Therapeutic effect of PRP therapy is based on use of platelets: blood cells that trigger the clotting process and play a key role in cell regeneration. A study published in 2010 by scientists from the University of Michigan (USA) has shown the presence of biologically active molecules in blood platelets, the so-called growth factors. There are 6 different types of growth factors that affect different parts of our body:

Epithelium (EGF), blood vessel endothelium (VEFG), fibroblasts (FGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), transforming growth factor (TGF-β), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). There are other growth factors as well, but one thing brings them all under one roof: These are natural substances that act as activators of regeneration and growth of new tissues in the body.  As a result, they are used intensively to treat various diseases.

With the injection of autologous plasma, which is rich in platelets and growth factors, the process of regeneration of cartilage and joint tissues starts in the joints and with an appropriate course of therapy a complete recovery of the joint is possible!

HOW PRP THERAPY IS PERFORMED

First, venous blood is taken from a patient. After this, centrifugation separates the blood into solid fractions and liquid plasma. After the centrifugation, a fluid saturated with platelets and growth factors remains in the supernatant and this is slowly injected into the affected joint by means of a syringe. To make the treatment painless, local anesthesia is used. The patient should perform several flexion-extension movements to evenly distribute the plasma in the joint. There are no restrictions on movement after the treatment.

The course of intra-articular PRP therapy consists of 3 to 6 treatments performed at intervals of 3 to 10 days.

INDICATIONS FOR PRP THERAPY

PRP therapy is recommended for pain in the knee, ankle, shoulder, hip joint and other joints, as well as for the following diseases:

-osteoarthritis of elbow, knee, hip, ankle, metatarsophalangeal joint in stages I-III.

-arthritis outside the exacerbation phase

- osteochondrose of the spine

-spinal disc herniation

-meniscus tear 3rd and 4th grades

- chondromalacia (destruction of the joint cartilage)

-avascular necrosis (destruction of the bone tissue of the joint)

-tendinopathy, myositis, lateral epicondylitis

-tissue regeneration after injuries of tendons, ligaments, cartilage.
